Alaska Hat

The first time I knit the Alaska Hat, pattern by Camille Descoteaux, it was quite big. It’s kind of adorable as a slouch hat though, but maybe not so practical for a windy day. I also carried the long colour floats, which are unfortunately apparent from the right side of the hat.

So I knit it again, two needle sizes smaller and without catching floats. I also made the ribbed brim longer and knit a row of straight knitting half way through so the brim would fold nicely. This hat is more snug and I like that the white background is uninterrupted. I’ve since learned about ladder back jacquard from Rachel and might try that next time I have long floats. I do wonder if even this would have been visible though. White shows all!

Both are wearable and look quite different. It’s interesting to see how the colour pools given the needles size, too. I used Jack Frost as the background and Alpenglow for the trees and brim, both from the Winter Collection. I think these would be lovely reversed.
